The NHS has paid compensation to women who have become pregnant or been injured by the contraceptive implant called Implanon.
The Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency have reported that since the launch of Implanon in the UK in 1999, 584 women using it had become pregnant, with 1607 reports of adverse reactions.
The implanon implant is a small plastic rod which releases hormones into the bloodstream, and is inserted under the skin of a woman's arm by a nurse or doctor.
